Program 1
$858KThe department of education title iii program "an equitable pathway to in-demand stem careers" provides a suite of activities to provide equitable on-ramps to stem pathways and careers. Activities include stem outreach in service area community colleges and k-12 institutions, bilingual workshops for parents. For incoming and ongoing students, the grant aims to increase the sense of belonging through peer learning coaches, modifications to first year seminar, stem speaker series, networking events with local employers, increase internship and research opportunities, strengthening industrial partnerships. In the fiscal year of 2023-24, 85 students were enrolled in the peer mentorship program with 12 peer mentors. Among the 58 students in freshmen status that completed the required activities, their average cumulative csub gpa is 0.25 higher than those not in the program. They also completed on average 5 more units than other students, where both statistics are shown to be statistically significant. Furthermore, 8 stem career talks featuring 15 career professionals were attended by 335 students. A stem career networking event was held alongside the csub career fair in spring 24 with over 70 in attendance. Also, 24 csub students participated in the winter csub/bc joint research program hosted at csub, while 23 csub students participated in the summer program. An additional 12 students participated in the year-round research program. A high school counselor summit was also held on fall 23 with a target of increasing stem applications from kern county high school students.
Program 2
$710KThe u.s. Department of education title vb grant "promoting excellence in graduate education and increasing hispanic stem related degree completion" aims to expand graduate research infrastructure, support graduate student recruitment and outreach, and to offer several programs that support graduate student and faculty development to increase hispanic student graduate degree completion. During the 2023-2024 grant year, activities included hosting a graduate studies summit, participating in grad fairs to promote graduate education, delivering workshops to strengthen graduate student support, delivering seminars to develop and support graduate research culture, and supporting graduate student research for stem students. Quantitative outcomes include the following: 5 faculty fellows participated in the faculty mentorship program and offered mentoring training to 10 additional faculty. 5 faculty-student collaborative research teams were supported, the graduate student center participated in 10 grad fairs, research and conference travel was supported for 7 graduate students, 9 graduate student workshops were offered and attended by a total of 127 students, 12 seminars were delivered to develop and support graduate research culture with 102 attendees, we hosted a grad slam three-minute thesis presentation competition with 20 student participants, and a graduate studies summit was offered with 55 student participants.

$8.9MOther educational advancement programs including:california state university bakersfield - high school equivalency program (hep): the purposes of the csub-hep program is to assist migrant and seasonal farm workers and their dependents in developing their knowledge and skills so that they may successfully earn a ged and pursue professional and academic goals. To help meet these goals, various strategies were designed to ensure that hep participants received additional supportive services in the areas of career and academic counseling, academic assessment and placement, health services, and financial assistance.
