The fraternity of the desert bighorn is a 100% volunteer non-profit organization based in las vegas, nv, with members "unselfishly dedicated to the welfare and conservation of desert bighorn and nevada's wildlife." the organization was founded in 1964 by a handful of concerned advocates and conservationists when the desert bighorn sheep population in nevada was at a historic low of less than 2,000 animals. The fraternity of the desert bighorn has worked over the last six decades in unison with ndow and other like-minded conservation groups to recover bighorn sheep populations in southern nevada now nearing 10,000 animals. The fraternity of the desert bighorn did not hold its annual banquet in 2024. During 2024, the fraternity of the desert bighorn installed two new water guzzler projects (muddy 7 & rug mountain) and completely replaced 3 existing water guzzler projects (sheep camp, rocky & donna). Each of these projects consisted of the installation of aprons, water storage tanks, plumbing, and drinkers ( area where the animals drink from). At the replacement projects, they also included the demolition and removal of the existing project materials. In addition to these projects the fraternity of the desert bighorn has begun the strategic installation of water tank monitoring systems (ranchbots) project. These systems allow the fraternity of the desert bighorn and government organizations to monitor the water level in the storage tanks and precipitation at the projects they are attached to. This information is then sent via satellite to the internet. The fraternity of the desert bighorn also continued its efforts to promote education about desert bighorn sheep and their conservation. The fraternity of the desert bighorn did this by supporting youth education at the clark county fair and range camp, and the education of the general population by supporting the desert bighorn council workshop, wild sheep foundation convention, wild sheep foundation chapters and affiliates meeting, and the nevada bighorn sheep working group. The fraternity has monthly meetings at sierra gold to plan water development and other projects to help the welfare and coservation of the desert bighorn and other wildlife in nevada.
