Program 1
$924KThe summer food service program (sfsp) is a federally funded initiative administered by the u.s. Department of agriculture (usda) and implemented in michigan by the michigan department of education (mde). The program addresses the meal gap experienced by low-income students during the summer months when they lack access to school-provided nutritious meals. During the summer of 2024, gleaners, as an sfsp sponsor, served a total of 85,082 breakfasts and lunches across 41 sites, comprising 27 stationary sites and 14 mobile sites.the child and adult care food program (cacfp) is another usda funded program administered in michigan by the mde. This program provides suppers to low-income children at schools and organizations providing after-school enrichment programming for youth throughout the school year. During the 2023-2024 school year, gleaners sponsored 16 sites and served 54,832 suppers to children in need.
Program 2
$859KCooking matters (cm) and food smarts (fs) are both national nutrition education programs that teach low-income families (both adults and children) how to prepare healthy meals economically and make healthier food choices. Fs is unique in that it brings a trauma-informed and more reflection approach to the educational content. Both are led by employee and volunteer chefs and nutritionists. In fy2024, nearly 1,300 people graduated from the program. Cm and fs are both still offered virtually and in-person, however the majority of classes take place in-person.
Program 3
$155KOur volunteer program creates experiences for people to engage in hunger-relief work. From packing food for community mobile, school mobile, or senior food distributions to working the front lines directly serving consumers at our shared harvest pantry in howell or fresh market pantry mobiles distributions in southwest detroit, volunteers play a critical role in packing and distributing food to our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Over 25,000 volunteer shifts were completed in fy2024 comprising over 54,000 service hours, representing the equivalent of 26 full-time workers.
