HOUSING LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

PROGRAM: HOUSING EDUCATION Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County (HLC) hosts two significant annual educational events: Housing Leadership Day and Affordable Housing Month. Housing Leadership Day (HLD) is an annual education event held in the fall. Last year's event included 9 workshops facilitated by HLC staff and partners, where attendees learn about the complex dimensions of building, financing, and democratizing affordable housing. Over 250 registered attendees learned about secondary units, building housing on faith properties, housing elements, the importance of public land, Article 34 and its impacts on housing and shelters, and how to include people that do not speak English as their first language in the discussions about housing. HLC also had the honor of hearing from several keynote speakers from California's legislature and housing space, including Senator Scott Wiener and Reverend Marlyn Bussey.HLC dedicates a month during the Spring for Affordable Housing Month (AHM). Through multiple events scattered throughout May, HLC engages hundreds of housing supporters across San Mateo County to collectively learn, mobilize, and understand the positive and extensive impact affordable housing brings. Attendees get the opportunity to participate in informative workshops, groundbreakings, housing policy panels, and affordable housing tours in which supporters come together to recognize the ongoing efforts and power of our local partners, elected leaders, and communities. In 2024, HLC was a planning partner for over 6 events throughout the month, bringing together hundreds of supporters.
