$6.5MResearchResearch programs at the Jones Center at Ichauway focus on understanding the ecology, restoration and management of the longleaf pine ecosystems and the water resources, wetlands and aquatic ecosystems of the southeastern Coastal Plain. The Center's research is integrated under three programmatic areas: Woods, Water and Wildlife. In 2023, 30 graduate students were co-advised by Jones Center scientists, and Jones Center scientists served on review committees for another 16 graduate students. The Jones Center's published work has now been cited 38,378 times (up from about 35,000 last year) and the Center's "h-index" went up to 102 (from 98 last year). This means that 102 Center publications have been cited at least 102 times in other scientific publications. Last year, Jones Center scientists contributed to 63 publications, including 32 peer-reviewed articles (published or In Press) in scientific journals (compared to 63 in 2022, of which 28 were peer reviewed).

$896KOutreachThe Jones Center completed construction on new classroom, dining and housing facilities in 2023, which allow the Center to host students, collaborators and groups for educational programming. In total, 1,661 people participated in Jones Center programs last year. The Center hosted 525 single-day visitors and 476 overnight visitors. Noteworthy outreach programs that convened university and government partners at the Center in 2023 include a prescribed fire smoke summit, ecological forestry workshop, prescribed fire classes and wildlife techniques class.

$4.2MConservationThe Jones Center's conservation program connects all mission areas of the Center through a shared focus on managing the land. In 2023, the Center's Conservation staff used prescribed fire to burn 14,200 acres of pine woodlands. The Center also collected valuable data on an operational timber harvest and completed its 25th breeding season of the endangered red cockaded woodpecker.
