Philanthropy and Youth (PaY) is a program designed to introduce local high school students to the importance of leadership and service through philanthropic research and grantmaking. In 2024, 500+ students from 20 area high schools made 137 grants (between $500 and $1,500) to 89 organizations totaling $120,000 and 14 PaY Administrative grants totaling $10,350.

The PaY Summer Internship program is designed to build on to the nonprofit experience students receive in PaY. Through these internships, students gain meaningful summer employment. PaY Summer Internships grants are provided to nonprofit organizations in the Fargo-Moorhead and northwestern Minnesota region. Each recipient organization is carefully matched with a PaY student who is hired to work on a special project over the course of nine weeks. In 2024, five grants totaling $30,000 were awarded from the Foundation and six community partners provided grants totaling $36,000 directly to organizations. The summer internship provided 11 student internships at 11 community non-profit organizations.

Program 3

$134K

The Barry Scholarship program is designed for the fulfillment of the foundation's commitment to philanthropy and promise to invest in the potential of students. The purpose of the scholarship program is to provide up to a four-year ($5,000 per year) renewable grant to individuals involved in the Philanthropy and Youth (PaY) program during high school to enable the recipients to complete an undergraduate education. Outside of financial support, the Barry Scholarship Program is a cohort experience that provides professional and educational guidance and personal development opportunities. The Scholars are selected based on their values, philanthropic and educational goals, and their involvement in the PaY program while in high school. The original scholarship guidelines and application were sent to the IRS and approved on February 11, 2016. The program meets requirements under IRS Code section 4945 (g)(1). In 2024, scholarships totaling $334,100 were awarded to 72 students.

Program 4

$41K

The PaY Forward program is an opportunity for graduated high school students to continue engagement with the Philanthropy and Youth (PaY) program, participate in other philanthropic endeavors, and potentially receive expanded scholarship opportunities. In 2024, opportunities included Problems 2 Possibilities (previously named Map the System). In 2024, PaY Forward scholarship and grants totaling $99,500 were awarded to 53 students and fifteen universities.
