Programs & Activities

Program 1

Public access and enjoyment of parcels of land totaling 380 acres more or less, in the towns of Marlboro and Halifax, Vermont was provided. Use of a network of over 3 miles of trails, logging roads, abandoned town roads and historical sites on Foundation property significantly increased during pandemic restrictions and appear to have continued. Although usage is not formally monitored and the many points of access make monitoring impractical, we observed signs of continued heavier use by members of the public such as the width of worn tracks from foot and bike traffic on the trails. We estimate that several thousand trips were made into the Foundation lands.

Program 2

Trail and historical site maintenance activities were conducted small teams of volunteers throughout the year and a crew of over 30 on Foundation Work Day. Work focused on the cleanup of recently acquired Tucker Cellar Hole and field work in support of mapping trails but also included clearing fallen trees, branch trimming of major recreational trails, repairing of stream crossings, and miscellaneous mowing and drainage work. Labor, additional materials, equipment use and fuel having been donated.

Program 3

The Educational Program featured a presentation, demonstration, and, for children, a hands-on activity "Discovering New England Stone Walls" led by Kevin Gardner, author of The Granite Kiss, about New England's thousands of miles of stone walls. Around 30 people attended.

Program 4

Scientific cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Benchmark Network and National Water Quality Assessment Program continued with the provision of undisturbed experimental sites. The Surveys monitoring of the upper watershed of the Green River is expected to continue indefinitely on Jenckes Foundation land.Forest management programs demonstrating long-term multi-use stewardship pursuant to Current Use management plans, on file with the State, included an on-site inspection of the Foundation's land and management activities conducted by the Windham County Forester with a Board member. The program also included field work pursuant to creating an updated Forest Managment Plan conducted by the Foundation's consulting forester with a Board memberThe land expansion program involved legal costs and extensive Officer/board work related to a parcel willed to the FOundation and making its way through the estate probate process.
