The Foundation hosted a recital, free to the public, by the winner of the McClure performance award. It also honored individuals who helped shape the development of music appreciation in Jacksonville, Fl. The event merited local newspaper coverage. The recital was followed by a reception. More than 100 people attended. The institutions which benefitted from the Honorees efforts are the Jacksonville Symphony, Jacksonville University, Florida State University, Duval County Public Schools, Friday Musicale and Riverside Park United Methodist Church. The Jacksonville Symphony was founded in 1949. Its Jacoby Symphony Hall seats 1,700 and offers varied programs each season including opera, jazz, youth orchestra and full symphony orchestra performances at other venues see Wikipedia Jacksonville Symphony. MUSICAL ASSET EXPANSION:The Foundation is working with Riverside Park United Methodist Church in upgrading and expanding its musical assets for enjoyment by the public of its varied musical programs open to the public. Over a period of three years this includes the acquisition of a Festival Trumpets antiphonal division for its organ. The music program there offers a variety of performances throughout the year including contemporary music at its contemporary service and traditional music at its traditional service. It offers community classes for a variety of topics including music lessons for selected instruments. The Jacksonville metropolitan area has a population of over $1.3 million.Projects on an ongoing basis are available on our website which currently has about 250 hits per month: AND WILLIAM A. BERTONCCINI COLLECTION AND THE J. PORTER SHAW LIBRARY:The Foundation acquired a collection of memoirs, historic documents, and artwork of whaling sea Captain, John Justus Bertonccini, skipper of San Franciscos square rigger Balclutha when it was called Star of Alaska. He sailed from San Francisco for decades as master of steam w haling barks as well as the Star of Alaska . He first went to sea in 1892 on a voyage to the Arctic where he served almost continuously on whalers and trading vessels until the 1930s. He was captain of the Star of Alaska in 1925 during a season in the Alaska salmon trade. John Bertonccini carried his personal logbook from vessel to vessel, command to command. The crews amused themselves when wintering-over at Herschel Island in the Arctic Circle with amateur theatricals. He painted two known scenes of their wintering-over there, one of which is part of the Bertonccini collection acquired by the Foundation. This collection also includes a large number of water c
