Program 2
$5.1MSponsored projects: grants in sponsored projects support a range of initiatives that support the mission and vision of the tohono o'odham community college. 1) a multi-year national science foundation (nsf) grant - "tribal enterprise advancement center", supports the effort to revitalize the o'odham language. 2) another nsf grant supports tocc's stem curriculum in the fields of math, chemistry, and biology. As a result, we now have a cadre of students who are pursuing education in stem fields and who can transfer to university upon graduation. 3) a grant from the state of arizona in collaboration with the tohono o' odham nation and the college funds major construction and renovation of college infrastructure. Those funds helped our apprenticeship program rehabilitate a space that serves our carpentry, electrical and plumbing students in their quest to be journey persons in the field and to have gainful employment in construction industries. The funds derive from transaction privilege taxes and the college realizes ca. $40k/month from those revenues. 4) the facilities improvement and repair grant from the bureau of education was used for removal of small structures that had fallen into disrepair and that were hazardous as well as taking up needed space on our small campus west of sells, arizona. 5) the title iii program from the department of education includes funds that can be used for construction and those funds were used to support the construction of a 6,500 square foot o'odham language center on the main campus. That center will provide office spaces, meeting spaces, and a curation room as well as a recording studio. 6) the title iii funds are also used to support tutors in a range of subject areas, a support that helps our students pass difficult subject areas. 7) a bia grant in occupational training helps support our apprenticeship program and from the american indian college fund help support the college's ced (general education diploma) program that is building its clientele and assisting folks who want to earn their high school equivalency and, in many cases, to go on for college degrees.
