Programs & Activities
Program 1
$11KThe foundation provides support to the western gateway elementary school, a dual-immersion public charter school established in the wheeler district. The school serves both an existing predominantly hispanic neighborhood and the newly developed wheeler district with a target enrollment of 50/50 spanish-dominant and english-dominant students. The public school has a student population that is representative of the socioeconomic and cultural diversity found within the western gateway area, of which the wheeler district is part. The foundation holds the title to the land on which the school facilities are constructed and lease the land to the school for a nominal rent. The foundation intends to provide programs at the school, including activities such as the following: bicycle safety; encouragement of healthy lifestyles; tutoring; mentoring, and providing school supplies and clothing to students in need. Support of the activities will help further the education and welfare of children wit
Program 2
The foundation organizes, hosts, promotes, and/or sponsors free concerts, festivals and other cultural events that bring people together and foster a sense of community. These events bring arts and culture to a historically underserved area bridging cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic divides. These events and activities enable neighbors to meet one another and build relationships not only within the wheeler district but also as part of the larger surrounding area.
Program 3
The wheeler community foundation will organize, plant, care for, protect and maintain trees throughout the wheeler district and the surrounding community. The planting and overall management of trees as a collective resource will provide environmental and human health and wellness benefits to the wheeler district and the surrounding area. This program is funded through the foundation's general budget, and labor may be provided by volunteers.
Program 4
The wheeler community foundation is committed to creating affordable housing to serve the residents in the wheeler district and the larger western gateway area, of which it is a part. Through financial subsidies, down payment assistance, low interest loans, and shared equity programs the wheeler community foundation will help to fulfill this commitment to provide affordable housing. This program is intended to include a blend of housing types and will serve households in the seventy percent (70%) to one hundred and twenty percent (120%) area median income range.
