The food fellowship is a year-round leadership and job training program for high school students, designed to prepare the next generation for careers in the food system while supporting their personal growth and community leadership. Fellows engage in hands-on culinary training, earn wages and college credit, and receive industry-recognized certifications like servsafe. Through immersive field trips and daily instruction from food professionals, students gain real-world experience in kitchens, on farms, and across the broader food system. They also benefit from leadership coaching, mentorship, and ongoing college and career counseling building a holistic foundation for success.in 2024, the program expanded its reach and depth, serving 19 fellows (up from 11 the year before) and delivering more than 2,500 hours of hands-on training. Fellows reported major gains in self-confidence, communication, and purpose: 95% said they feel confident setting their own goals, and 100% reported stronger connections and readiness to create change in their communities. Alumni now return as peer mentors, helping to strengthen the cohort model. The year also saw the launch of too many cooks a student-created zine that amplifies youth voices around food justice, sustainability, and creative expression.

As an extension of next course cafeterias, the summer community meals program expanded dignified, chef-prepared school meals into the summer months filling a critical nutrition gap when school is out. In 2024, the program activated two school kitchens and served 9,449 fresh meals to 855 youth across seven sites in neighborhoods with high rates of food insecurity. Meals were served in familiar school and community settings by trusted staff. This model provided more than nutrition it offered consistency, care, and a sense of belonging while fighting childhood food insecurity through the summer while leveraging usda child nutrition programs.
