Research & Writing: The Institute conducts theoretical and academic research into the systems and paradigms used for the design, development, and use of AI technologies. Specifically, the institute seeks to understand how, when, why, and for what purposes an actor would employ AI technologies, and use this contextual understanding to develop technical and policy frameworks to guide the use of AI in a responsible and socially beneficial manner. Practically, the Institutes theoretical and academic research involves using Institute personnel or hired contractors to assess or analyze the applicability or use of AI technologies across disciplines such as economics, political science, sociology, and cognitive science, and to propose or consider frameworks for constructing, developing, or utilizing AI technologies for socially beneficial purposes. In most cases the work will result in a published white paper or academic article that analyzes the risks, incentives, and capabilities of AI technologies in the applicable context.
Moral Learning:Aligning technology to human objectives requires understanding those objectives, and the virtues and values behind them. Through this work, we hope to find answers to the questions of what it means for an AI to represent moral virtue and values, and what components are required to build such systems. The aim is both transparency (understanding what is represented in an LLM) and complementary tools (adding what is missing with an explicit reasoning layer), using cutting-edge computational approaches to social reasoning.
