Aia Honolulu

Public awareness programs: a) annual canstruction design build competition - canstruction is a trademark of the society for design administration (sda), working in tandem with the american institute of architects (aia) and other members of the design and construction industry. This honolulu-based event is an annual community service program of the local aia honolulu chapter. Canstruction combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams, led by architects, contractors, and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibition, all of the food used in the structures is donated to the hawaii foodbank. B) architecture month - aia honolulu hosts various events throughout one designated month designed to increase public awareness and appreciation for architecture and to foster discussion about the built environment such as: visits to architecture firms, film showings, and family activities.

Outreach efforts: a) public forums on topics related to the built environment - aia honolulu, through their center for architecture, offers public interest programs and communications to the public regarding the built environment. Topics relate to design and planning issues of current interest to the local community.
