Mission

To provide safe shelter and supportive services for survivors of domestic or sexual violence; and to effect the social, political, and legal changes needed to eliminate oppression, gender violence, and violence against children.

Programs

2 programs

AWARE's violence prevention programs include primary and secondary prevention strategies organized into pathways that involve the community. AWARE facilitates the Haa Toch Lichesh community prevention group that implements community-based strategies for resilience, healing and wellness. These strategies include equity-based learning opportunities with indigenous healers and elders, cultural wellness activities, youth-focus groups focused on diversity and inclusion, and pathways for men to hold leadership roles in the movement to end gender violence.

Expenses: $780K

AWARE's Juneau choice & accountability program (JCAP) works with men who have used abusive or coercive tactics with their intimate partners. Most of the referrals to the program come from the court system after a domestic violence conviction, or are part of recommendations from a probation officer. This 24 week program includes applicable lessons on communication, conflict resolution, empathy and skill-building exercises that emphasize equity and safety.
