Mission
Mission: Research, develop, and advocate for technologies to benefit minority and marginalized populations. Activities include: 1. Research and identify technological challenges experienced by certain communities, such as research to uncover systematic issues for people who stutter in speech-related technologies and telecommunication systems; 2. Evaluate existing technologies, especially technologies powered by machine learning and artificial intelligence, to understand their performances and gaps for people who stutter; 3. Design and create technical solutions to close the experience and performance gap in existing technologies for the stuttering community, making existing technologies more accessible and accommodating to users who stutter; 4. Develop general recommendations and guidelines for accessible speech and telecommunication technologies; 5. Advise, mentor, and support the stuttering community as well as other disability communities on technical issues.
Programs

Mentorship and educational program. In 2024, we provided mentorship and educational outreach to students in technical fields, focusing on community-centric, socially conscious technology that is inclusive by design. Our team delivered guest lectures on AI fairness and accessibility at local schools and universities, and mentored over two dozen students from local high schools and leading universities through master's projects and year-round internships. AImpower staff and senior volunteers guided students in UX design, HCI research, software engineering, machine learning, and AI, through public-interest projects such as inclusive videoconferencing tools and equitable speech AI for people who stutter. This program deepens our collaboration with educational institutions and empowers the next generation of technologists to design accessible, socially responsible technology. The program is fully operated by AImpower volunteers and staff donating their time.
Public advocacy program. In 2024, we advanced public advocacy efforts promoting community-centric, socially conscious technology that serves marginalized populations. As part of this program, we launched and maintained a bi-weekly "Tech for All" newsletter, sharing insights on inclusive technology practices and developments. We also published a series of blog posts focused on the design, ethics, and impact of socially responsible technologies. AImpower staff and volunteers spoke at conferences, participated in podcasts, and contributed to media interviews to raise awareness about the importance of accessibility, fairness, and equity in technology. These outreach efforts are designed to influence public discourse, educate technologists and stakeholders, and promote the values of inclusive innovation. The program is operated by AImpower volunteers and staff members donating their time.
