See schedule othe idea for airbnb.org began with one woman opening her home for free to neighbors evacuating during hurricane sandy. Airbnb.org now provides free emergency temporary housing to people severely impacted by natural disasters, and relief workers responding and helping communities recover. In 2024, this included funding and facilitating stays for thousands of people in response to hurricanes helene, milton and beryl, wildfires in california, and other natural disasters across the u.s., as well as earthquakes, wildfires, and floods around the world. Airbnb.org provided grants to nonprofit partners to fund some of these stays. Stays were also offered as direct assistance to evacuees referred by government and nonprofit organizations, with funding and facilitation through airbnb.org's response activation platform. This platform directly connected evacuees with hosts, some of whom provided free and discounted stays and community support.
