Board certification: the acvim seeks to enhance animal and human health by advancing veterinary internal medicine through board certification. Our specialists undergo considerable postgraduate training beyond the six to eight years of college education normally required to earn a veterinary degree. This postgraduate training includes an internship, residency and documented clinical experience that lays the ground work for a candidate to take a certification exam leading to diplomate status. Acvim is recognized as the specialty college responsible for establishing training requirements, evaluating and accrediting training programs and examining and certifying veterinarians in the specialties of cardiology, oncology, neurology, nutrition, large and small animal internal medicine.

Membership: acvim member diplomates have access to the journal of veterinary internal medicine (jvim), discounts on resources, continuing education, volunteer and leadership opportunities as well as an online community to discuss specialty specific issues with their peers. As of december 31, 2024 acvim had 3,836 active diplomate members.
