Mission

To provide educational services and programs concerning hand surgery; to stimulate research and investigation of and teaching on the methods for preventing, correcting and treating diseases of the hand arising from congenital, developmental, nutritional, traumatic, or other causes; to perform and do any and all such other acts as are necessary, convenient, or proper to the attainment of these objectives.

Education program - elevating the skill level of surgeons in the areas of hand and upper extremity surgery through funding of educational programs and awarding of grants. Included in here are resident and fellow scholarships which allow approximately 170 young surgeons to attend the assh annual meeting at no cost.

Outreach program - to provide "short term missions" of hand surgery/therapy in combination with practical education on current treatment options for common problems in underserved areas. In 2024 the touching hands project conducted missions to ethiopia and honduras.

This award will recognize a hand surgeon who has d International Guest Scholarships to competent young surgeons from countries other than the United States or Canada who have demonstrated strong interests in teaching and research. The scholarships, in the amount of $8,000 each, provide the Scholars with an opportunity to visit clinical, teaching, and research activities in North America and to attend and participate fully in the educational opportunities and activities of the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress.
