Communications - communications activities are a key part of ahs' educational outreach and member service offerings. The organization's flagship bimonthly magazine, the american gardener, provides useful and authoritative information on a range of horticultural topics. In combination with other resources offered via the ahs website, an online magazine archive, with issues dating back to 1922, provides the public with access to a vast trove of gardening information and ideas. Ahs is a leader in creating authoritative gardening reference books that put the most current horticultural information in the hands of professional and amateur gardeners across america. Ahs engages a national community of gardeners and garden enthusiasts around the world via multiple social media platforms.
Garden and buildings - the american horticultural society (ahs) maintains, opens to the public, and enhances river farm, the society's 27-acre headquarters, which was one of five virginia properties originally owned by george washington. A site of regional, national, horticultural and historic significance, river farm hosted over 37,000 visitors during the year ended june 30, 2024. During fy24, ahs installed a new garden at river farm featuring 2,400 individual native plants and native cultivars across 30 species, launched the children's nature library and reading room, and installed eight bluebird boxes.
Educational programs - during fy24, ahs shared the art and science of horticulture with people at all levels of gardening expertise through the following educational programs: 923 gardeners attended 34 lifelong learning sessions. 380 public gardens and arboreta nationwide participated in the ahs garden network program offering members free or reduced admission with additional opportunities for experiential, garden-based learning and appreciation. 147 learners registered for gardening in america, an online course. 137 youth educators attended the 31st annual national children and youth garden symposium. 99 travelers joined five ahs travel study programs. Ahs awarded six national great american gardeners awards to encourage excellence and honor the achievements of individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to horticulture in america. Two college students received valuable hands-on experience through paid internships helping to shape the horticultural leaders of tomorrow.
