Mission

Formed in the wake of october 7, 2023, the american jewish medical association (ajma) builds an empowered community of jewish health care professionals committed to combatting discrimination and antisemitism by promoting merit and excellence.

Programs

2 programs

Ajma holds in person and virtual events to build community among jewish healthcare professionals and students. Local events incorporate speakers of interest as well as networking opportunities. The mentorship program connects senior physicians and faculty members with students and junior trainees for advice, support, and professional connections. Further, resources available to ajma members provide support against antisemitism and anti-israel hate.

Expenses: $15K

To combat antisemitism within institutions, ajma mobilizes affiliated members across a wide sphere of influence faculty, alumni, board chairs, and staff to utilize existing institutional processes to address these structural issues. To address issues within medical associations, ajma leverages its national voice representing thousands of jewish healthcare professionals and trainees to combat statements, resolutions, and stances at various medical associations that have been hijacked by protestor mentalities and false narratives. Ajma also works with local chapters and other jewish organizations to turn the current climate into an educational opportunity. We educate administrators and peers about the source, meaning, and dangers of antisemitism; how zionism is central to jewish identity; and how significantly israel contributes to medicine. Critically, we work to ensure antisemitism is considered on its own, without being socially weighed against anti-muslim and anti-arab biases. Ajma also seeks to support and protect individual victims of antisemitism - be they patients, professionals, or trainees, no matter their seniority or discipline. We advise on processes within institutions, and particularly what to do when the proper channels have been hijacked against jews. At some institutions, the administration is so explicitly hostile towards jews that legal avenues need to be considered from the beginning. Ajma helps those who have been victim to antisemitism find legal counsel, maintaining relationships with organizations and firms that offer pro bono or professional services to address antisemitic incidents.
