American Legion

Programs for youth development, Americanism, and community building. Cheverly American Legion sponsored several youth sporting teams to include the Cheverly Soccer Club and the Cheverly Boys and Girls Club for multiple sport seasons. We host the Cheverly Soccer Club end of year gala to bring community together. We sponsor the Boy Scouts and the Cub Scouts and allow them to use our building free of charge. We also work with numerous civic organizations to make our community stronger and more patriotic. Programs for our Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts fostered Americanism programs for the community; including routine meetings, celebration dinners, pinewood derby's, servicing US flags, hosting ceremonies and gatherings for Veteran's Day and Memorial day. Expenses also include donations to Eagle Scout Projects and adult leader recognition programs. This does not include the use of the American Legion Building (which we pay all utilities, maintenance, and volunteers for clean-up). We sponsor local high school juniors to attend the Department of Maryland Boys' State where young men learn about citizenship, leadership, collaboration, teamwork, compromise, diplomacy, and how state and federal government interact. We interview candidates for Boys' State and sponsor their room & board for the week.

The purpose of the American Legion is to serve the needs of Veterans of all wars, their widows, and dependent children. The American Legion in Cheverly Maryland continued to help our Veterans and the youth of our area. The Third significant program is "Rehabilitation" - which includes helping Veteran's when there is an emergency such as not able to pay their utility bills. Included in this amount is cost for membership we send to National and Department, a donation to a local Gold Star family who recently suffered the loss of their service member, a special honor dinner for Vietnam veterans, a dedicated morale fund for local veterans struggling with PTSD, as well as Wreaths Across America to honor our Veterans Cemetery's.

The American Legion supports Americanism and Community. The American legion supported many town and local organizations who are working to enhance communal green spaces and local trails, develop lower income neighborhoods, and support those in need, including veterans. Veteran's often use local trails and green spaces for their rehabilitation. Two specific groups include Cheverly Native Planting Project, which emphasizes the use of Native Plants to enhance the local beauty and environment within the community, and Friends of Lower Beaver Dam Creek, who repair, maintain, and beautify the local hiking trails. Both groups invite veterans to assist with the outdoor work, which can be therapeutic for veterans. The American Legion also supported and hosted town community and community organization events.
