Mission
The Appalachian Peace Education Center's three largest programs are the Rural Urban Bridge Initiative, Racial Justice, and Peaceful Planet Initiatives. All these programs work to bring communities across Southwest Virginia, Western North Carolina and Northeast Tennessee together to work for peace and justice. One active campaign includes research, education, and activism regarding a nuclear weapons permit in the region. APEC does citizen science and original research regarding water testing, soil testing, and airborne pollution. APEC organizes through a Racial Justice initiative to educate and make changes in the community. The program brings together local business, churches, schools, and more to establish best practices for dismantling racism and building healthy racial relationships. APEC works to build bridges accross different populations to work toward solutions to common problems.
