Civic Engagement ActivitiesAIWAs civic engagement projects are driven by issues identified by low-income immigrant women and youth. These initiatives involve issue education, self-advocacy, and collaborative networking with partner organizations. In 2024, members of the Homecare Worker Committee continued to advocate for retirement benefits and holiday pay. They drafted a petition, gathered signatures from fellow home care workers and their employers, and met with a county representative to present their concerns. Plans are in place to amplify their petition through social media, mobilize community supporters, and continue building relationships with elected officials and labor unions.

Educational ProgramsAIWAs educational initiatives include workplace and digital literacy classes, thematic workshops for adults, and general meetings and workshops for youth. In Spring 2024, AIWA conducted workplace literacy classes in which participants practiced conversations about job types, workplace preferences, and public communication. Concurrently, during digital literacy sessions, youth members and community volunteers taught women how to use various smartphone apps and functions.Women leaders also engaged in experiential learning to deepen their understanding of race, gender, and class. They visited the Women of the Black Panther Party mural and the Black Panther Party Museum in West Oakland. Participant reflections included:I learned that Black people, led largely by women, fought for freedom and rights. The history of Black unity and resistance was eye-opening. I admire their spirit and determination, which inspires us to fight for our own rights.
