Mission
The association for women in matematics creates a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors and to promote equitable opportunity and gender-inclusivity across the mathematical sciences.

Awm provided around 50 travel grants for women to attend national and international conferences on mathematics. The purpose is to provide women the funding to present their mathematical research at the conferences, thereby increasing the visibility of the work being done by women in mathematics. Awm also provided travel support to 5 to 10 women mathematicians each year to work one-on-one for several weeks with senior women mentors in their mathematical field of specialty.
Awm organizes special conferences and special sessions at national meetings of other organizations for women to meet, discuss their progress in the field, and collaborate on research. The most prominent event is the awm research symposium held at clark atlanta university which hosted 350-400 participants, including over 150 graduate studnets. In addition to organizing its own biennial research symposium, awm sponors workshops at national mathematics meetings (of the american mathematical society, the society for industrial and applied mathematics, the mathematical association of america, and the society for advancement of chicanos/hispanics and native americans in science). These workshops include poster sessions for graduate students, scientific sessions for working mathematicians, panels on current topics of interest to students and professional mathematicians, named lectures given by women mathematicians, and a mentoring program connecting the students with researchers in their fields. The workshops showcase the work of early career and senior career level women mathematicians. 90-100 women were supported to attend these workshops. Additionally, an awm lecturer series to honor womens achievement in mathematical sciences and education are presented at these coincident meetings. The emmy noether lecture is held at the joint mathematics meeting; the etta b. Falconer leture is held at the maa meeting; and the sonia kovalevsky lecture is held at the siam meeting. The lecturer for each annual lecture is selected based on the outstanding quality of their research. Approximately 200-300 attendees, both women and men, attend the lectures. Awm supports establishing research networks for women by fostering research collaborations at conferences and awm workshops.
