The STEM Enrich Summer Academy is supported by Georgia Pacific to provide a four week summer learning experience for 45 middle and high school students. They participate in hands on STEM/STEAM workshops including graphic design, drone aviation, artificial intelligence, music and coding, and engineering micro bits. Weekly field trips to STEM/STEAM museums took place to familiarize the students with the history of technology artifacts. Their field trips to STEM corporations allowed them to shadow professionals and learn about their day to day work responsibilities.
The Career Readiness grant funded by United Way supported over 75 high school students in gaining tips on writing college essays, completing college applications, and applying for financial aid. The sessions provided insights on researching their careers of interest, the education requirements, and the average salaries. A final component of the career readiness sessions entailed mock interviews and a review of interpersonal skills that most employers are seeking in their candidates.
