Awaiaulu Inc

This project is named Na Hunahuna Ike. Using the 19th century Memoirs of John Papa Ii, the objective of this project is to significantly increase the competency of eight Hawaiian language translators. In addition to training translators and editors, the project will result in publishing the Memoirs of John Papa Ii in both Hawaiian and English. That book is expected to be a valuable resource for researchers, educators and the general public. This is an ongoing project running through early 2026, and is primarily funded by a federal Administration for Native Americans (ANA) grant.

This Project is named Ke Kumu Aupuni. Awaiaulu's trainees spent many years assembling, translating and editing Samuel Kamakau's 6 years of articles in 19th century Hawaiian language newspapers. His writings include the beginning and political rise of Kamehameha I, and the negotiations and battles that unified the Kingdom of Hawaii into a single Hawaii government. In December 2022, Awaiaulu's work culminated in publishing Kamakau's writings as "Ke Kumu Aupuni: The Foundation of Hawaiian Nationhood". This book is presented in both Hawaiian and English. It is a valuable resource for researchers, educators and the general public. The initial edition of Ke Kumu Aupuni sold out in 2023 and a 2nd edition was published. An audio version of Ke Kumu Aupuni is also under production.

This project is named Kakoi. This project involves two trainees adapting material from "Ke Kumu Aupuni" to prepare a 100 page, illustrated, historical novel on the exploits of Kamehameha. This will be targeted to young adults, providing them with more knowledge of Hawaiian history.

Other translation projects include translations and training of translators; and also includes final reading and editing of material developed during Translation Training (described above) for publication. Almost all the published and other material will be used for education in Hawaiian language, history and culture.
