Mission

Black Men Teach (BMT) recruits, prepares, places, and retains Black male teachers in elementary schools by building a robust pathway to the teaching profession.

Programs

4 programs

Collective Impact: Black Men Teach understands that it takes the full community to fulfill our mission. Black Men Teach leads a cohort of other nonprofits, universities, and state government entities to come together and each do its part to recruit, train, support, and retain our educators.

Expenses: $478K

Teachers: Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP), Instructional Coaching and Alternative Certification. Most teachers graduate school with student loan debt. and Black men have significantly more debt than their white counterparts. This burden often leads men to leave the profession. SLRP pays off the principal amount of student debt held by practicing teachers over a five-year period. Black Men Teach also supported two teachers with down payment assistance toward their first home close to the school they work. For fiscal year 2025, twenty-five men were directly supported by this program and approximately 400 elementary school students benefited from them remaining in the classroom. An instructional coach visits each teacher's classroom to coach their teaching methods to improve student learning and participation.

Expenses: $409KGrants: $191K

Events: Black Men Teach supports our mission by holding multiple events each year to provide recruitment, training and celebration of our program participants including the Brick by Brick Event, the BMT Conference, the BMT Educators Event, and Retreats and Workshops

Expenses: $50K

High School: Black Men Teach's High School Fellows Program supports Black male students as they explore education as a career pathway. Fellows receive mentorship, early exposure to teaching, leadership development, and college readiness support. The program helps students build their identities as future educators, strengthens their academic and professional skills, and connects them to long-term opportunities within the Black Men Teach pipeline.
