Mission

Our purpose is to expand access for Black women to pursue careers and opportunities in science, particularly in the areas of ecology, evolution, and marine science. We also provide resources and mentoring to these women interested in pursuing a career in science.

Programs

Mentorship and coaching program: 22 pairs of mentors/mentees worked together over the year to support each other in science, education and professional development. Each pair met monthly and gave their monthly updates on challenges and successes to BWEEMS. Mentors were also able to meet with other mentors to get support and advice to better support their mentee. This program is tasked with supporting BWEEMS participants by pairing mentors and mentees together and supporting their professional development skills and career advancement.

Community meetings and virtual programming: 12 community meetings and virtual programming was offered throughout the year to enrich the professional development and networking opportunities for BWEEMS members. This included a two part workshop on getting into graduate school and finding academic advisors that will be supportive not only in graduate school, but beyond. BWEEMS community meetings are a space for networking and sharing stories to create community. Through the development of this space we have found that there is better communication between our members and that. members feel more supported as scientists and therefore more likely to stay in science because they have community.

BWEEMS hosted 96 writing accountability meetings to help support BWEEMS members to get their work done while having a supportive environment in which to do this. We also started a coaching program with three coaches who worked with participants on different topics including graduate school applications, CV development, and career guidance

BWEEMS hosted an international conference in Brazil in December of 2024. Over 60 people from 3 nations attended this 3 day conference. Additionally 10 early career scientists were able to get their diving certification.
