Canine Classmates

Canine Classmates works with the McKenna Children's Museum. A mentor and service dogs visit the Museum for 2 to 3 hours on the 1st Saturday each month. The goal of the program is to encourage families to read together. We also try to educate children on service dogs and their benefits in education. We also discuss the proper way to approach strange pets. This is an all-volunteer program that makes contact with over 2,200 parents and children each year.

Canine Classmates works with the Comal County District Attorney's office to assist children in the court system. A Canine Classmates service dog provides comfort and encouragement to the child as they prepare to testify. The dogs don't accompany the child into the courtroom, but the child knows that the dog will be waiting when they finish. The dog helps ease an extremely stressful situation. The Canine Classmates service dog stays with and focusses on the child to ease their anxiety while they are at the courthouse.
