National heart hospital in lusaka, zambia africa. This first mission to zambia was focused on adult heart surgery. This mission was complicated by a lack of disposable supplies. Being a first mission, we had to test the system slowly to ensure safe progress. Two cases were done, one with the use of an intra-aortic balloon pump (iabp) postoperatively. A first for cardiostart internationally. Interventional cardiology performed 3 cath. Lab procedures with the local team with donated materials. Three days of classes for advanced cardiac and basic life support classes were held. Outreach at the kasisi children's home orphanage of 285 children supplied the clinic with bandages, dressing supplies and medicines.
Abuja federal medical center. The focus of this mission were 4 complex/high risk cardiac interventions. The team continued multidisciplinary skill transfer and education. These cases not only challenged the local teams' skills but also deepened their understanding and strengthened their expertise in managing complex cardiac cases. (lasuth-lago's state university teaching hospital) the return to lasuth added pediatric cases to their skills. Three children and two young adults received heart surgery while ongoing skill transfer and assistance for the local team. This host team has thrived under support of cardiostart and edwards lifesciences (grant support). They have expanded to assist other african programs through education and program development.
