Queen city classic chess programs: the queen city classic chess tournament is an annual event which creates an oppurtunity for children to challenge their minds while competing against other students regardless of their physical or economic limitations. This event also provides chess players the oppurtunity to learn from and compete against some of the greatest chess masters and grandmasters in the world. The qcc tournament, held in person in 2024 at paycor stadium has over 551 chess students ranging from grades k-12 participating in the tournament. To ensure that any student with interest can participate in the tournament, the cris collinsworth proscan fund offers a discounted registration fee for students who meet the established guidelines. Chess teaches kids essential life skills such as critical and strategic thinking, understanding of cause and effect and planning for different outcomes, academic discipline, patience and good sportsmanship. As a way of exposing as many students as possible to chess, the chess instructors teach chess to children in local greater cincinnati public and private schools during the school day, after school programs, and summer camps. In 2024, qcc provided in-person teaching to approximately 3,000 students in 66 schools and programs with approximately 4,600 instruction hours throughout the year.
