Mission
CWJ is organized around the following priority issues: workers rights to proper payment and safe work, protecting/improving housing options, ensuring equal access to community services for all residents, and empowering assistance to those affected by immigration policies.
Programs
2 programs
Defending workers rights to proper payment and safe work. Our community organizers took on cases throughout the year, totalling over $150,000 of stolen wages. By working with victims to file claims with regional and federal labor agencies, sending letters to employers, sending delegations and protests to businesses, CWJ was able to recover $20,000 in wages. Many cases are continuing into 2025, with more victories to come. We also collaborated with the University of Iowa Labor Center to host a worker education workshop series called Stepping Up for Iowas Future, a program focused, in part, on increasing workplace health safety amongst young construction workers.
Protecting and improving housing options for low-income residents. Spent significant time and effort organizing manufactured home park residents in Johnson County. We hosted know-your-rights workshops, a fair housing legal advice clinic, tenant listening sessions, tenant association organizing meetings, and visited the Iowa State Legislature in conjunction with the Iowa Manufactured Home Residents Network for a Day at the Capitol. We also worked with 16 families and the City of Iowa City to maintain their access to Section 8 housing vouchers.
