Mission

Establish criteria and standards for the profession of music therapy to assure competent health care is rendered to the public by implementing and promoting an accredited certification program for safe and competent music therapy practice.

In fiscal year 2024 a total of 1,367 candidates were tested.719 new credentials were awarded. 1,418 certificants were recertified by demonstrating continuing competence in the current practice of music therapy.continuing education helps to insure safe and effective practice for the consumer of music therapy services.cbmt maintains a program of approved providers of continuing education designed to provide effective training for maintaining competence related to the current board certification domains and practice of music therapy as measured by the practice anaysis study and implemented in august of 2020.

Accreditation with the national commission for certifying agencies (ncca) is reviewed by ncca annually during the five year period of accreditation. It involved rigorous review of cbmt programs, assessment, psychometric procedures, policies, resources, and adherence to all ncaa accreditation standards for private certifying bodies.these standards are adheared to for public protection and public education regarding the need for competent, qualified music therapists to provide music therapy services for consumer safety.cbmt's accreditation application was reviewed in 2021 and renewed for another five year period, through november 2026.

Cbmt maintains its five year accreditation status for the mt-bc credential with the national commission for certifying agencies. Accreditation demonstrates compliance with industry standard requirements for national certification programs.

Cbmt is currently engaged in a state recognition plan to educate the public and state legislators about the need for qualified, professionally trained music therapists to provide services to protect the public from harm. There are currently 48 state task forces, and regulations have been passed in 19 states.

Annual reports are required and cbmt's 2023 report was reviewed and accepted.
