The Charleston Gaillard Center (the Gaillard) is a non-profit arts organization located in Charleston, South Carolina, that commissions, supports, presents, and produces ambitious, multidisciplinary cultural programming and provides access to the best local, national, and global artists and companies on its stage. Deeply rooted in the community, the Gaillard is committed to elevating local and regional voices and partnering with Charleston institutions to reflect the city's diversity. The Gaillard serves over 30,000 students annually through its multi-faceted, curriculum-based Arts Education Program that includes mainstage productions with accompanying lesson plans and in-school workshops, masterclasses, teacher professional development and a series of summer camp programs. With help of generous support from Arts, Etc., the Gaillard has experienced record-breaking participation from schools in Johns and Wadmalaw Islands over the past several years. The Gaillard Center is requesting money for Arts, etc. to become a Founding Partner for their theatrical work based on the life of Robert Smalls, a formerly enslaved man, who engineered a daring sea-escape during Civil War. The production is set to debut Oct. '23 in Charleston and will serve as a pilot program for family theatrical programs highighting Southern minority stories. Once ready, the Robert Smalls Theatre for Young Audiences Mission includes: 4 free performances in LowCountry, free in-school workshops (not necessarily Johns/Wadmalaw) with goal to reach 6000 students in Lowcountry, reach 3000 families, enusre 70% of students participating come from Title I schools in community including complimenatry tix and free bus, tour outreach to surrounding counties with goal to tour nationally. In addition, the Summer Theatre Program received a $13,500 grant for summer 2023 programs.
