Contractors Association Of Kauai

The association sponsored six general membership meetings which provided members, potential members, and guests with timely industry information, education, and appropriate updates on emerging issues. Th six meetings included the following: - in february, dr. Keli'i akina, ph.d., the ceo of grassroot institute of hawaii, spoke on issues that would be impacting the business community and consumers in the legislative session. - in may, the members gathered at the kauai community colleges culinary arts complex where the second-year culinary arts students prepared a "final test" tapas meal for the members and guests of the contractors association of kauai. The guest speaker was the new chancellor of kauai community college - margaret sanchez. - in june, the association sponsored its annual meeting honoring the cak scholarship recipients and their parents. The keynote speaker was dr. Brennon morioka, ph.d., pe the dean of the university of hawaii's college of engineering. - in august, honolulu based developer craig watase, president of mark development provided an update on the company's newest work force housing project called u'ahi ridge in lihue, kauai. - in october, the members learned about future expansion planned for the samuel mahelona hospital campus in kapaa. Lance segawa, the regional ceo of hawaii health system corporation and state house of representative member nadine nakamura spoke on the proposed masterplan expansion. - in december, the association held its annual meeting and installation of officers with keynote presentations from keith t. Hayashi, the state of hawaii superintendent of public schools and audrey hidano, an associate superintendent for construction and auxiliary services. Mr. Hayashi spoke on future plans for the public school system and ms. Hidano provided updates on construction plans for the kauai district.

Seven kauai students shared in 11,500 worth of scholarships. The scholarship funds received were retained in the association's restricted account to be awarded in 2024: - kailash letman, a 3rd year architecture major at wentworth institute of technology in boston, massachusetts received a cak scholarship. 1,000 - kailee oyama, 3rd year civil engineering major at santa clara university received the guy matsunaga memorial scholarship. 2,000 - destrey shibuya, a 4th year civil engineering major at the university of hawaii, school of engineering received a kenneth shioi memorial scholarship. 1,500 - don rb bumanglag, a 2nd year construction trades major at the kauai community college, who plans to be a carpenter, received a kenneth shioi memorial scholarship. 2,500 - dylan lee, a 1st year architecture major at the university of hawaii, manoa received a cak scholarship. 1,000 - radon sebastian, a 1st year pre-engineering major at edmonds community college in washington state received a hawaii gas scholarship. 1,500 - talen koerte, a 1st year civil engineering major at the california polytechnic state university in san luis obispo received a cak scholarship. 2,000

1. The association continues to file complaints on behalf of its members to the regulated industries complaints office (rico) on unlicensed contracting. 2. The association also provides service to consumers who call the office seeking license contracting referrals and/or seeking confirmation of contractor's license and insurance information. Most consumers are not aware of the several types of contracting licenses in hawaii. 3. The association produces a monthly newsletter, which is the association's internal communication tool. Included in the newsletter are flyers and registration forms for membership meetings, all the available safety training courses, etc. 4. The association continues to work towards increasing the number of member companies participating in the group health insurance program with our partner, hawaii medical service association (hmsa). Currently there are over 300 individual members in the program. The association put in place a new offering for companies who want to provide a supplemental program for retiring members. The hmsa akamai advantage was offered as a supplemental plan. 5. Government affairs: - the association provided testimonies to the hawaii state legislature on senate bill 2746, relating to harbor safety. Testimonies were submitted to senate committees on transportation and cultural and the arts and to the senate ways and means committee. After the bill passed the legislature, the association sent a letter to governor green asking him to veto the bill that would be financially difficult for both consumers and businesses. The governor eventually vetoed the bill. - the association provided comments and suggestions on bill 2926 relating to amendments to the kauai county building codes. Representatives from the contractors association of kauai board of directors collaborated with the council chair and council members to amend parts of the bill, clarify other parts of the bill and delete redundant parts of the bill. The final product passed the council to the satisfaction of the association and was signed into law by the mayor. - the association provided comments and suggestions on hb 7141, hd1, relating to mooring lines. Testimony opposing this measure was sent to the hawaii state senate committee on ways and means bill. The association asked the governor to sign the bill and provide funding for dam safety which translates to public safety of our communities.
