This grant supported two exhibitions:(1)Diedrick Brackens: Heaven is a muddy riverbed broughttogether a group of the artists weavings whichcentered on the catfish motif. Recalling a haunting story of the drowning death of three Blackmen in police custody in the town where Brackens was raised, the woven tapestries paid homage tothe deceased and to the many symbols embraced by bodies of water.(2) Jaishri Abichandani: Flower Headed Children curated by Anu Vikram brought this mid-careerartist recognition on the west coast and the exhibition can be credited for igniting new interest in her artistic practice. This Brooklyn based artist whose brightly colored sculptures speak tohuman rights, equity for all and featured a portrait gallery of South Asian Heroines celebratesfemale energy while revealing the darker side of female victimization.
