Day One

Prevention education and professional training - at the core of day one's prevention education efforts is programming for school age children and college age young adults. Each year, day one reaches thousands of k-12 students with workshops focused on sexual abuse awareness and prevention; interpersonal violence awareness and prevention; healthy relationships; and dating violence. Bringing together every college and university in the state, the cross-campus collaborative meets monthly to share learning and exchange best practices for sexual violence prevention on college campuses. Last year, our educators presented over 100 interactive sessions and workshops at schools around the state, reaching a total of 1,385 students, parents, faculty, and staff. Our focus in 2024 was on developing and providing more community-based prevention education programs. On a larger scale, day one conducts an intensive public awareness campaign each april to educate the general public about sexual violence. Coinciding with sexual assault awareness month, the campaign reaches tens of thousands across the state with messaging on billboards, and through radio and print ads. Through our professional training program, day one advocates and educators provide training to thousands of legal, medical, and law enforcement professionals each year. With a goal of improving services to victims of sexual assault, training focuses on victim-centered law enforcement advocacy, trauma-informed sexual assault response, and human trafficking, specifically the exploitation of children.

Adult advocacy - our adult advocacy programs provide victims of sexual assault with a myriad of services, all free of charge. Our sexual assault advocates are available to provide confidential crisis intervention, emotional support, legal and other information, as well as advocacy, in person and by phone at police stations and hospitals and/or court for both adult and child victims of sexual assault/abuse. Through the victims of crime helpline, day one sexual assault advocates and specially trained volunteers provide 24-hour victim response, fielding hundreds of calls each year. In 2024, day one's victims of crime helpline volunteer advocates went on 246 go-outs to meet victims at hospitals and police stations, and our sexual assault advocates reached 604 victims.

Children's advocacy -focused on responding to child sexual abuse, the commercial sexual exploitation of children (csec), and child sexual abuse material (csam), day one's children's advocacy programs offer evaluation, evidence gathering, and case management services, as well as referrals for clinical treatment. Day one's children's advocacy center (cac) is the basis of the model we use to serve victims of sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and child pornography, as the cac's multi-disciplinary team (mdt) approach offers wrap-around services, including case management, crisis intervention, clinical interventions, and criminal justice advocacy. In 2024, the cac provided services statewide to 486 child victims of sexual abuse and their non-offending family members through the cac. Our csec/csam programs served 64 child survivors of sexual exploitation.
