Department Of Bioregion

Regenerate Cascadia is a nonprofit program of the Department of Bioregion dedicated to catalyzing a multi-generational movement for ecological, cultural, and economic regeneration across the Cascadia bioregion. The program supports place-based communities in co-developing bioregional strategies, collaborative governance models, and portfolios of regenerative projects rooted in the unique ecological and cultural context of their landscapes. In 2023-2024, Regenerate Cascadia hosted a 30-day Bioregional Activation Tour engaging more than 1,000 participants across 14 communities, launched two core programs-BioRegen and BioFi-and started planning the first Cascadia Bioregional Finance Conference. These efforts collectively advance shared learning, regional coherence, and investment in long-term systems change across watersheds in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.

The Departments of Bioregion is the top-level program of the Department of Bioregion nonprofit, focusing on educating a global audience about bioregionalism, bioregions, bioregional mapping, and bioregional movement-building. The program fosters the creation of decentralized, place-based "Departments of Bioregion" that serve as local hubs for bioregional education, organizing, and community resilience. These hubs enable communities to grow their own healthy nonprofit backends through a federated model of distributed leadership, supporting aligned programs and grassroots initiatives through both direct programming and fiscal sponsorship. The Cascadia Department of Bioregion is the first pilot of this model. Departments of Bioregion supports the regeneration of place-based communities by providing essential nonprofit infrastructure, including fiscal sponsorship, human resources, compliance, and administrative systems. Through these efforts, the program helps communities reconnect with their local ecologies, build capacity for self-governance, and co-create regenerative systems rooted in equity, sustainability, and long-term stewardship.
