Community engagement - bringing people together for projects, meetings, and events is important to dia and is reflected in our motto "involvement builds community." our spring dimond shine day brings out some 150 residents-adults and kids-to pick up litter, weed and mulch, clean mosaics, paint light poles and garbage cans, etc. Our fall oaktoberfest family-friendly festival draws thousands, showcasing the dimond business district and its german roots, as well as raising the lion's share of funding for our ongoing programs. Our holiday dimond lights crafts fair, co-organized with the dimond merchants association, showcases local artists. Periodic community meetings offer election forums, and present speakers and topics of local interest.
Public safety - dia works to deter and respond to crime in our community, and reduce the number of panhandling and homeless persons in the commercial area, so that merchants, residents, and shoppers can enjoy the dimond and feel safe as they work, visit, patronize, or pass through the neighborhood. Dia has funded and installed four sets of security cameras and supplies video footage to the police and crime victims as needed. Dia also works on pedestrian and vehicle safety by engaging oakland's dept. Of transportation and our city councilperson on sideshow deterrence and crosswalk enhancement.
