The dlt executive director and board of directors consistently engage texas state legislators and staffers on data, trends, and donation equities. The state legislature is scheduled to meet again in 2024. During the 2023 cycle and throughout 2024, dlt provided several members and staffers with information on such topics as "mandatory opt-out" systems and living donation opportunities. As part of effective communications to congressional leaders, donate life texas brings together several organizations around the state in order to promote communication alignment and consistency which include: texas' 3 organ procurement organizations, eye banks, tissue banks, living donor organizations, volunteers, advocates, donor families, funeral professionals, academic personnel, medical professionals, and others.
Donate life texas' partnership with texas department of public safety (dps) in 2024 added just over 720,000 texans who said 'yes' to organ, eye, and tissue donation. Texas' transportation code requires organ, eye, and tissue donation educational materials are available to all those conducting business at the 250+ texas driver's license offices across the state. Additionally, the code requires all dl and id card applicants be asked about becoming an organ donor. To satisfy these requirements, donate life texas continues to provide training, education, material and recognition programs to texas dps offices, leaders, and personnel to leverage their public interactions on behalf of organ, eye, and tissue donation. Dlt's efforts with dps here resulted in over 90% of all those who joined the registry did so through a dps office. In addition to a partnership with dps, dlt also coordinates organ donation awareness with the department of motor vehicles (vehicle registration) and texas parks and wildlife agency (hunting and fishing licenses.)
