Mission

Elp mobilizes people, leverages resources, and empowers social, emotional, and early litercy programs that prepare children, birth to age five, for school success.

Programs

Reach out and read ror: this program involves training local doctors and staff in ten pediatric sites where new, diverse, age, and language appropriate books are provided for each child, birth to 5 years during their well-child visit. Doctors give anticpatory guidance to the parent. Doctors use this opportunity to educate parents about the importance of reading, talking and bonding to their child to support early brain development. Ror is provided to all children, but the pediatric practice must serve a large percentage of medicaid patients who are low to moderate income. 58% of all clients are medicaid recipients in this program. Two sites are federally qualified health centers, one site is a federally recognized tribe known as the catawba indian nation through indian health services, and numerous children are represented in low income census tracts such as 604.01, 616.02, and 612.02 across york county.

Expenses: $113K

Community book giveaways: this program provides new and donated books and early literacy resources to community partners throughout york county to promote access to and book choices for children. Areas where books are distributed would be laundromats, little free libraries, victory garden international mobile food pantry, family literacy programs in each of the four school districts in york county, churches, pathways community center, and the hospital nicu department. Distribution of these books take place in communities of need with 50% or greater of low to moderate incomes.
