Mission

Edgemoor Research Institute's mission is to bring together non-profit, for-profit, government, end users and other stakeholders to work together to share knowledge and establish voluntary technical solutions to complex data-related public policy challenges: 1. With respect to the Internet, to (a) research and develop concepts underlying data registration directory services that encompass the needs of the multiple communities that collect, process and use registration data; and (b) develop a voluntary and flexible framework and model for expressing registration data directory services policies; 2. To develop methodologies for building similar frameworks and models in other fields; 3. To engage in research to analyze and compare policies, create tools to facilitate such research and make them available for general use; 4. To engage in educational initiatives, including by convening multi-party discussions and decision making processes.

Programs

1 program

Edgemoor Research Institute developed a framework and model for representing the rules registrars use or propose to use for collection, validation, and labeling data elements and the rules requesters propose to follow in order to get access to that data for scientific purposes. This framework and model, now called rules normalization and application, was originally developed in Excel. Project Jake focused on Domain Name Registration Data collection and disclosure policies. The primary result is a proposed distributed architecture. In 2024 Klaus Stoll volunteered as acting COO to focus on Project Jake. With his leadership, ERI increased its involvement with the requestor community. Public meetings within the ICANN community, two public webinars co-sponsored with CircleID, and several meetings in other organizations took place. Work on the framework and tools continued.
