Theater j - a nationally-renowned, professional theater that celebrates, explores, and grapples with the complexities and nuances of both the jewish experience and the universal human condition. Hailed by the washington post as "the most influential jewish theater company in the nation," theater j has received over 75 helen hayes nominations and ten helen hayes awards. Each season, theater j produces six to eight plays, featuring a mix of recognizable, under-explored, and brand-new works that examine themes such as immigration, language, assimilation, genocide, religion, and otherness.now in its 35th year, theater j presented a landmark 2023-2024 season, showcasing seven full-length plays with over 19,020 tickets sold. Offerings included four world premieres, two east coast premieres, and a new musical adaptation of the beloved film hester street. Highlights included the trish vradenburg new jewish play prize and the patty abramson new jewish play prize, as well as the continued development of two english-language adaptations from the yiddish theater lab. Expanding the canon, launched in 2022, continues to commission seven racially and ethnically diverse jewish playwrights to craft full-length plays centering the untold stories of jews of color, with draft development and workshops progressing this year. Additionally, theater j launched theater jr., an initiative to engage children and families with high-quality productions that celebrate jewish culture and identity, beginning with the hannukah-themed tiny lights: tales for hannukah.committed to preserving jewish culture and engaging audiences of all backgrounds, theater j reaches across all eight wards of washington, dc, as well as maryland and virginia. Through bold storytelling, innovative initiatives, and educational programming, theater j remains at the forefront of american jewish theater, celebrating diversity and creating works that resonate nationally and internationally.

Athletics - the edcjcc fitness center provides a low-key and easy exercise environment for individuals and families through a wide range of fitness programs. Both fitness center members and visitors can take advantage of our state of the fitness center which features our leading industry branded precor cardio and sectorized strength equipment and free weights machines. There are two exercise studios that host over 30 group exercise classes with the likes of les mills body pump, yoga, pilates and senior fitness classes. In addition, our 60 meter 3-lane pool provides programming such as "kids group swim" from ages 4 months-12 years old, lap swim for adults and aqua fitness programs for seniors.the fitness center strives to create an environment where both individuals and families can form long lasting friendships and subsequently get involved in other jcc activities including the arts, community service projects, and educational classes and lectures about jewish culture, religion, and history.

Jxj - presented by the edlavitch dcjcc, jxj is a multidisciplinary arts program that encompasses the washington jewish film and music festivals. The public programming of jxj is split between weekly programs that take place in cafritz hall - a state-of-the-art performance and cinema venue in the center's irwin p. Edlavitch building at 16th & q streets, n.w. - and an annual may festival presented on stages and screens throughout dc, maryland, and virginia. One of the largest and most respected jewish film festivals in north america, the washington jewish film festival (wjff), entering its 35th year, is an international exhibition of cinema that celebrates the diversity of jewish history, culture and experience through the moving image. The washington jewish music festival (wjmf), going into its 26th season, enjoys a prestigious position as one of the leading presenters of jewish music in the usa.between the festival and year-round programming, richard solloway jxj teen film contest, and matthew harris ornstein jxj short film fund - jxj traditionally attracts upwards of 20,000 patrons annually. Jxj has ramped up the scale and scope of our cultural programming to include weekly production runs, sneak preview screenings, and monthly concerts. Our programs platform local and international artists, making them eligible for internationally recognized festivals and awards. As of fall 2024, jxj has seen 88% of pre-pandemic audiences return to our year-round program, and 20% year-over-year audience growth during the festival.
