The mission of the elgin youth symphony orchestra is to create a community of young musicians, enriching their lives and the lives of their families, schools, communities, and beyond, through the study and performance of excellent music.

Starter strings - elgin youth symphony orchestras' starter strings program provides beginning violin instruction, tuition free, to 88 low-income students in the oakhill (streamwood, il) and roland d. O'neil (elgin, il) elementary schools. Students are provided with an instrument and receive group instruction after school. The annual program culminates with a performance by all of the enrolled students.
