For several years we have partnered with the IFAS Extension and 4-H office and other agencies to put on the 3rd Grade Ecology Day. Students are taught about plants and what is needed for the plants to flourish. The Florida Wildlife Commission talked about their jobs and what they do to help our local environment. Students learned about control burns and why it is important for our forests. Madison County Farm Bureau helped the students understand the importance of the agricultural industry, specifically all the corn we grow in Madison County and its uses.
During Ag Literacy Day volunteers read the book 'Work of the Wings' to students at Camp Cherry Lake in Madison. Every year a new book is read which spotlights a different sector of our agriculture community. This year's book taught students about the importance of honey bees. These types of events allow us to reach young students who learn the value of agriculture and its affects on our quality of life.
