Mission
Francis park is owned by the city of st. Louis, which has limited funds to maintain the park. A group of city residents got together and formed friends of francis park (fofp), a 501(c)(3) corporation, to preserve, improve, support and promote our neighborhood park and to help fund and implement improvements in francis park. Fofp works closely with the neighborhood association, our alderperson and the city parks department. Fofp is funded through private contributions and the net proceeds from the annual run for the hills and foot golf events. It has no paid employees. The city parks department as well as our 2nd ward alderperson have been included in all of our discussions about proposed improvements or fund raising activities in the park and must approve any improvements or activities proposed by fofp before they are implemented or scheduled.

During 2024, the enhancements/addition to the snakes in the grass sculpture in the park were completed. Costs incurred in 2024 totaled 64,500. The sculpture was dedicated to one of the co-founders of art in the park (art in the park is an (almost) every year special event, which is held in francis park. Proceeds from the event have funded a variety of sculptures in the park including the original snakes in the grass sculpture, which was installed in 2017. Art in the park was not held in 2024 but will return in fall 2025.
As in 2022-2023, in 2024, due to limitations on city resources, fofp -along with other neighborhood organizations- funded some grass cutting for the park as well as costs to remove and clean up dead trees in the park. Additionally, fofp funded park maintenance, landscape work and trees/flowers for the park, and maintenance and cleanup of the park's beautiful and iconic lily pond, including repairs to the wall in the creek area, maintenance of the david r. Francis statue area and a winter cleanup of the native garden area.
