Friends Of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge

National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grant project Restored habitat for eastern prairie fringed orchid, rusty-patched bumble bees and a suite of grassland/wetland-dependent birds, performed with the support of volunteers and students in the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge. The project outcomes include removal of invasive woody species on 24 acres of wetlands and the creation of 26 acres of grassland habitat. This provides enhanced habitat for wildlife and improved recreational opportunities for the general public.

Other restoration projects include the Morton Arboretum NICOR Grant project, Schaid Parcel restoration, to restore a remnant five-acre bur oak savanna, and a NIOCOR grant project to complete restoration work at Tryon Grove, both located within the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge. These projects provide enhanced habitat for wildlife and improve recreational opportunities for the general public.
