Medical supplies and educational materials: The first help the Foundation offers to its patients starts at the hospital, when the child is diagnosed with diabetes. The Welcome Diabetes kit is sent directly to hospitals for newly diagnosed children type 1 (10 partnerships with hospital throughout the island that refer newly diagnosed patients to the Foundation). The kit includes the following medical supplies the pediatric patient needs in order to be discharged from the hospital: syringes, insulin case, insulin vial protectors, glucometer, alcohol swabs, glucose test strips and diabetes educational materials. The kits are either sent or delivered personally by our staff at the hospital. 154 kits were delivered free of charge during the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024. This program allows the Foundation to generate statistics of incidence of type 1 diabetes in patients with 0 to 18 years old in Puerto Rico. These statistics are the only ones existing at present time in the island. The program is endorsed by the Puerto Rico Hospital Association and by the Department of Health.

Diabetes education for school personnel: The program educates and trains school personnel on how to effectively manage diabetes, to ensure a safe environment at school for our patients with type 1 Diabetes (T1D). It is offered free of charge and responds to the needs and rights, as per federal and state legislation, Section 504 and PR-Law 199. A total of 6,794 school staff were impacted from 449 schools (304 were public schools and 145 were private) around the island, for a total of 96 trainings offered in San Juan, Ponce and Aguadilla, PR (58 were virtual (2-hour basic training) and 38 were in person (6-hour certification). 742 students with type 1 diabetes benefited from the service.
