Glow Up Girl Incorporated

Our drop-in, After-School program provided a safe space for 70 throughout the year girls to receive help with homework, peer and adult mentoring, snacks light meals, and personal hygiene products. Girls meet up with friends or make new friends. A combination of planned activities, scheduled events and free time keep the girls active. Our book club meets twice weekly and girls gather once weekly to experience and learn the fundamentals of cooking healthy foods preparing healthy snacks. Our drop-in program offers girls opportunities to volunteer in their community. Glow Up Girls learn responsibility, accountability, kindness and compassion which is embedded into every aspect of programming. Increasing confidence and love for learning and growing is at the foundation of this program.As a result of our after-school program we have seen an increase in the number of girls who report reading for pleasure, Increase the number of books students read outside school, girls make healthier food choices, remain active in after school hours and report trying harder in school.

The Glow Night Program introduced girls across Wayne County to a host of successful women from across the county. The purpose of the program was to help girls begin to see the opportunities available to them in the world of work. Often our vision for self is limited by our view of the world. This program expanded their view. The girls were introduced to professional, para profissional and blue collar workers allowing them to begin to see themselves in these positions. We introduced the girls to women working in careers dominated by men such as law enforcement and pest control and careers more traditionally filled by women such as cosmetology and baking. This program allowed the girls to not only meet these women but spend time with them performing hands-on activities with the leadership of the women. 70 girls and women participated in this program. Girls reported being excited about potential careers, increasing the number of careers they believed to be available to them and seeing themselves in careers they had not considered precious to this program.
