Mission

Green light new orleans provides sustainable solutions to individual homes and encourages collective action to create a more resilient community, one household at a time, by installing rain barrels, backyard vegetable gardens and distributing free energy efficient light bulbs. Programs employ a full non-discrimination policy and prioritize low-income communities in new orleans, la as they are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

In 2024, Green Light New Orleans partnered with the STEM Library lab to provide educational resources for local schools. Through the rain barrel service learning project, 110 barrels were sent to classrooms for service learning and education on topics of weather, climate, green infrastructure, environmental science, and civic engagement.

In 2024, two grants (H20 the Future, and SouthFace) provided funding for weatherization and energy efficiency projects for Green Light New Orleans, attic insulation for a limited number of residents, and development of carbon capture methodology related to the rain barrel program and weatherization activities. In 2024, ten residents were provided with attic insulation and solar panels were obtained for Green Light New Orleans.

In 2024, 775 volunteers were engaged in 2250 hours of service supporting Green Lights mission to provide low cost residential level green infrastructure (rain barrels) as a solution to local flooding and climate challenges. Volunteers upcycled food grade barrels to become functional environmental art, each uniquely painted and provided to applicants at a sliding scale cost share. Each volunteer is educated on the mission, purpose, benefits, and impact of the program. Independent Sector Value of Volunteer Time in 2024 was $34.79, for a total of $78,277.5 contributed volunteer time for Green Light New Orleans.
